Average Tutoring Rates Per Hour – Read Here!

How Much Does Tutoring Rates Per Hour?

Tutors are often hired to teach students in various subjects. However, tutors may charge different rates per hour depending on their qualifications.

In fact, there are even companies that offer different tutoring services at different rates. For example, some people hire private tutor for math or English classes while others hire a corporate trainer who teaches employees how to perform better at work.

The average hourly pay range for tutors varies from $25 – $50 an hour. Hourly tutoring rates vary widely depending on the subject matter, location and other factors.

In fact, tutors who charge less than $25 per hour are low-income earners. Those who charge more than $100 per hour are high-income earners.

In general, tutors earn anywhere between $15-$40 per hour. However, there are certain subjects where tutors can expect to make much more than this.

For example, math tutors can make upwards of $50 an hour, while foreign language tutors can make around $60 an hour.

In this article, I will break down average tutoring rates and provide information on how to calculate how much you should charge per hour.

Rate base on Tutor’s Experience Level

As mentioned earlier, tutors have varying levels of experience and knowledge about teaching. This means they might be paid differently based on their expertise.

However, it’s important to note that not all perfect tutors receive equal compensation. Some get higher paying jobs because of their skills and experienced tutors.

If you want to know what your rate for tutoring is worth, you need to consider both your skill set and your experience when calculating your hourly cost.

In addition, you also need to factor in things like the type of clientele you serve, your location and any additional training courses you took.

Rate base on where you tutor

Most university tutors choose either home or private tutoring as their primary service offering. Home tutoring usually involves tutoring children whereas private tutoring focuses mainly on adults.

According to PayScale, the median salary for working full time tutor was approximately $23 per hour. While the mean annual income for tutors was $29,000.

That said, if you decide to go solo as a home tutor then you can make up to $30 per hour after taking into consideration cost of living expenses.

If you opt to become a perfect tutor, then you could make up to $48 per hour before taxes. The reason many parents prefer hiring private tutors over public ones is due to convenience.

A good way to estimate prices is to look at average hourly rates charged by similar businesses around the same location or area. This helps determine your target price range without feeling overwhelmed.

Rates base on Tutoring Company or Agency

Rates amongst agency tutors differ from one another in terms of services provided. For instance, some offer only online classes while others focus mostly on face-to-face sessions.

In addition, some cater only towards students while others specialise in helping professionals enhance their career prospects.

Some agencies may even require tutors to complete mandatory trainings before they accept new clients. These requirements add cost of tutoring will to the overall process but help ensure quality control.

When choosing a particular agency, do your research well. You should check out reviews posted on websites such as Yelp and Google+ so you can see what previous clients had to say.

Also, ask friends and family members whether they used the company and whether they were satisfied with the results.

Factors that affect cost of tutoring

The above factors are just a few examples of how rates vary between different tutoring services. However, there are more than that which we didn’t mention here.

Other variables include:

  • The level of difficulty of tasks assigned.
  • Whether the student needs immediate assistance or prefers to wait until later.
  • The availability of qualified tutor.
  • Client preferences regarding the style of instruction.
  • How much support staff is needed.

How much should you charge?

Here are three ways to figure out how much you should charge as a tutor:

Step 1) Calculate Your Base Rate

You first start by determining the minimum wage you would earn if you were working full time with no benefits. To do so, multiply your annual salary by 40 hours.

Next, add 10 per cent of this number which represents your bonus/commission. This gives us our starting point. We now divide this amount by 50. The result is our basic hourly rate.

Example: If your yearly income is $30K, then the total after bonuses and commission comes to $769.00. Divide this amount by 50 15 cents per hour.

Step 2) Add Value Added Products & Services

Now we need to determine whether you offer value added products or services such as lesson plans, test prep programs.

Adding these items increases your earning potential substantially. When adding them, keep in mind that most clients are willing to spend extra money to ensure quality results.

It takes a lot of effort to come up with good lesson plans and materials. So don’t undervalue yourself. You’re doing a great job!

Step 3) Determine How Many Hours You Work Each Week

Next, check if you’ll be able to help enough students each week to justify charging a fixed price. Based on my research, one student typically requires 4–5 sessions before he becomes familiarised with his lessons.

Afterward, however, he may require just one session every two weeks. Therefore, consider charging a fixed fee instead of hourly fees.

Here’s why:

When you charge hourly, you lose control over your earnings since you cannot predict exactly how many hours you’ll end up spending during a particular period. As a result, you could end up losing money due to unexpected expenses.

How many Hours should you work to make a living as an Online Tutor?

Many online tutor session start off as volunteers before they become full time instructors. This means that many tutors begin with little experience but have passion about teaching.

As such, it is important that tutors get enough training so that they know what works best for teaching online courses.

In addition, tutors need good writing skills because these days most people learn through reading rather than listening.

This also means that team of tutors need to write content effectively and ensure that it keeps learners engaged throughout the duration of the course.

If you want to generate income as an online tutor, then you need to plan your weekly schedule carefully.

You might start small by offering one lesson every week. Then gradually increase your hours until you reach your goal.

It’s always a good idea to set aside time each morning to review lessons taught earlier in the day. Doing so will help you improve your craft and hone your instructional techniques.

Conclusion

If tutoring is something you would like to do as a career, invest in a college degree. This may be a good market for you once you finish school.

If your long-term aspirations are looking to own a private tutoring company or work as a private tutor, then invest in a college degree.

In general, tutors charge higher rates in major cities because of the higher cost of living. The cost of living may be higher in a city, but the demand for tutors could be higher as we
